Choosing The Right Dog Food

When you get a dog you want to take all the appropriate steps to ensure you help the dog be as healthy as possible. Along with making sure you give them a safe living environment and make sure they are up to date on their vaccinations, you also want to be sure to feed them the right dog food. Choosing the right type of dog food may not be as clear cut as you would have thought. Here are some of the things you want to consider when choosing the right food:

Consider the dog's age – If you have brought home a puppy, then it will need extra nutrients and more things, such as fats. This is why you want to give a puppy puppy food until they are at least a year old. Puppy food will have all of the extra things they need to grow properly and maintain their health. If you have an adult dog, then regular adult dog will do. Older dogs should be given dog food for aging dogs, so you know they are getting the proper nutrients for their bones and other body systems.

Consider the dog's current health condition - If you have brought home a normal, healthy dog, then you can give them regular food. However, if you have added a rescue dog to your family who is under weight, then you want to get a food for them that will help fatten them up. If the dog has allergy issues, then you'll want to choose a food that is for sensitive dogs so you won't cause an allergy flair up. If the dog has bad teeth that make it hard for them to chew, then you will want to go with a softer food, or even wet food.

Consider the dog's activity level – If you have brought home a full-grown dog that is a bit more on the relaxed side, then regular food will be a good fit. However, if you have a dog with a lot of energy, then you may want to choose food that is higher in calories.

Consider grain free dog food -  Grain free dog food is healthier for dogs. You should try to go with a food that has real meat products and as little fillers as possible. A good rule of thumb to follow when you are choosing dog food is to look at the first few ingredients. The first ingredients mentioned should be real meat products, such as chicken, lamb or beef. Also, try to stay away from very colorful food, since they are colored with dyes.
